2002 FIFA World Cup (PS2)

2002 FIFA World Cup (PS2)
Manufacturer: Electronic Arts (Limited availability)

Determined to squeeze every last ounce out of the FIFA licence, Electronics Arts have released yet another footy sim for the PS2–and oddly enough it concerns the World Cup. Taking the essence of FIFA 2002 and modifying it for the world’s greatest tournament, EA have restricted the scope of the game, offering only two modes of play (full tournament and friendly) and the 32 teams which are taking part in the tournament. That said, it still plays the same as its older brother and the look and feel given by the inclusion of the new stadia and enhanced sound effects really brings the game to life.

Owners of the full-fat 2002 game will want to think very seriously before paying out for this “special” release, but for those who’ve not come across the franchise before, or those looking for a break from Pro Evolution Soccer, this game has entertainment by the sackload. Graphically it looks the business and the pre-match build-ups are eye candy to please any jaded palette. In-game, too, the player graphics are nicely detailed and there are some wonderful individual animations covering all manner of complex looking moves, swerves and dives. In fact, the only thing that really lets the side down is the speed of the game during more hectic midfield moments, when the framerate stutters appallingly–a little poor for a game that’s been through so many development revisions. Control is nice and simple and it’s a breeze to pick this title up and start booting the pigskin around the park within a couple of minutes, though mastering the finer points of ball control and the elusive “lob in” will take a good deal longer.

2002 FIFA World Cup really does have a lot going for it. It’s not as technical as the ISS games, and it doesn’t have the scope or gameplay modes of FIFA 2002, but it does have atmosphere by the bucketload. If you’ve a newcomer to the franchise or you’ve missed the last couple of major releases then it’s certainly worth a look.–Chris Russell

Looks Good…Plays BAD”"
I agree with many others, the Fifa titles have great detail….but Pro evolution completely wipes the floor with FIFA World Cup 2002. Yes Fifa’s looks great….camera angles are appauling….it’s like watching a match at highbury..you can’t see the other side of the pitch!! The players look close to their normal selves…but then!!!…..you shoot and since when in football did a player arch his leg back and waith before unleashing a canonball..I’ve never saw it..where is the one touch passing the quck tap ons????? This game failed in so many ways..

The options for matches..you could only play teams in the world cup!! or the special world teams!!! u couldn’t customise a thing!! What a waste of money!!!

Excellent
This is quite simply the best football game I have ever played. It’s a big improvement over Fifa 2002, where you could just run the length of the pitch and blast it in. Now, every defender is a big threat, and accurate passing will become a huge part of your strategy.
The game also captures the feel of the world cup, with authentic stadiums and mascots. The players look identical to thier real life counter-parts and even move like them too.
This game is excellent.

ok… ish
Amazing or disappointing?
This game has some good points yet some minor bad points.

Good: It has a really easy start up menu and you can get into the game immediately. When you go to world cup mode, everything is sorted and you can start playing straight away. When you come onto the pitch, the commentry is there, and it shows great stadium graphics. The commentry is really annoying but that is not bad, every football game is like it! When you play, you can dribble, run, and sprint, which is brilliant for those who want absolute accurate shooting.

Bad: The graphics are crap! sorry, they are not that bad bad but they need a lot of improvment. The players don’t really look like their actual ‘character’. And - too bright, its like a Dysney! not good! But apart from that, the graphics are fine, just me being picky. The controls are ok if you get used to them. To sprint you constantly have to press triangle, over and over and over. If you want you could sue the game makers for giving you repetative strain injuries. Yeh you can change the controls but you still have to keep pressing a certain button again and again. And if you want to tackle a guy who has the ball, you got to do all of the finger exercises just to catch up, then who have to tackle! All I can say right now is “grrr” but hey!

It is still a really good game and would recomend it if you want a game with an international cup!
