The finest football simulation series receives further refinements in Pro Evolution Soccer 4. The presence of an on-screen referee is perhaps the game’s most obvious new feature. What’s more, this twenty-third being on the pitch is more intelligent than his invisible predecessors: advantages are played more frequently and the fairness of decisions is improved. Another welcome new feature is that of player-specific special moves, whereby only certain gifted footballers will have outlandish tricks in their repertoire–very much in keeping with real life.
Although there was little room for improvement over Pro Evolution Soccer 3’s supreme gameplay, Konami has seemingly found it. Dribbling has been given especial attention; the result is tighter control. Crosses, too, are now easier to perform exactly as desired. Also, penalty kicks and free kicks offer increased accuracy with their adoption of a new control system.
Some 136 club sides, including all 56 teams of the Spanish, Italian and Dutch leagues (these are officially licensed) are on offer in Pro Evolution Soccer 4, as well as 50-odd national teams. Typically, this new version of Pro Evolution is the most comprehensive to date–the new season in videogame football kicks off in spectacular fashion. –Jonti Davies
best footie game for PS2This is the first Pro Evolution game in the series i have ever brought and it did not disapoint. I only got it because all my mates said it was much better than the fifa games which is very true. The gameplay is so much better and you dont get high scoring matches like you do in Fifa which adds to the entertainment. Also the computer is more realistic for example going all out attack when its losing 1-0 with 10 mins to go.
The flaws to this game are:
No licenced premiership teams or stadiums
Very difficult to score from free kicks
Commentry not as good as Fifa.
If Konami sort these things out, The next Pro Evolution soccer game will be a must have for all footie fans
Looks like football, FEELS like football
Pro Evolution Soccer 4 is like a fine wine, it simply gets better with age.
Whilst I agree with the initial comment by the previous reviewer (in that having played PES3, PES4 may seem inferior), I would also say that you just have to keep playing this game to see how good it really is.
Never has there been a game of fooball simulation where you can actually score real goals. I guarantee you that every goal you have seen scored this season, you can replicate it in this game, it really is THAT good.
It comes with the usual challenge of the Master League where your ‘Dream Team’ is gradually assembled. However now you have the added challenge of not just winning the International Cup etc. now you have to win each domestic league, which is no mean feat! This is done to build up PE Points which can be used to unlock a variety of goodies like Classic Teams, classic players and even new goal celebrations.
The game caters for newbies and casual games with an interactive training section which will have you mixing it up with the pros is notime which brings me to another amazing feature of the game- just like real football, anything can happen. I have seen many an established Pro Evo-er destroy another with constant attacks on goal, only to be undone by a lucky counter-attack or penalty decision- just like real football.
Even the refs are at it! Penalties are regularly given OUTSIDE the box, decisions constantly given the way of the home team, and scandalous red cards dished out, it all depends on the day, and that’s the sheer beauty of Pro Evolution Soccer.
Yes, seasoned veterans may take awhile to adjust, but this is one game that you will keep just coming back and coming back to. If you like football, you’ll love this game and for 17 quid ?! what you waiting for !!
Expansion Rather Than Sequel
I loved Pro Evo 3- the gameplay was by far the best of any football game since Sensible World of Soccer, but it was let down slightly by the lack of licensed players and teams. After hearing mixed comments about Pro Evo 4, I decided to hold out until it went down in price. Pro Evo 4 does have licensed players and SOME licened leagues- namely Spanish and Italian leagues, that is. It noteably lacks licensing for the Premier League, with the old ‘West London and co’ names returning from the previous version. Gameplay has been slightly tweaked, but it is hardly noticable, and in my opinion not really an improvement. Is Pro Evo 4 worth the money? if you havn’t got Pro Evo 3, then YES. If you have, it may be worth thinking twice about getting this.
